The Leaving Party

The Leaving Party

Party and the off

We're off again on our travels!!!
After months of thinking about it, formulating the plan, booking our flights and last minute packing we were in need of a farewell party with a fine mix of Tod harriers, Calderdale tri club members and West Mount Vets staff. The theme was Heros and Villains, creating a good opportunity to get the fancy dress box out. Mr and Mrs Incredible hosted the party with fine attendences from Dangermouse, Trinity, Bonnie and Clyde, Calamity Jane and Wyatt Earp (or was it Woody from Toy Story), Number 1, Santa, The one and only miniture hero and may more.
Two weeks since the party now and our Bikes and bags are packed. A marathon has been run and we are ready to go......

Free ferry

29th Jan, Wild camp at junction Tortel road to Wild camp small river (23M)

It certainly knows how to rain over here. I keep wondering how many more days it can go on. Non-stop all night and to add to our woes we also managed to snap another tent pole this morning when we tried to push water off the outer. Not happy campers this morning.
Drying out in a kiosko
We had a ferry to catch on the next part of the journey so we decided to wait out the weather for the morning in the hope that it may clear and aim to catch the evening ferry. By midday it had brightened up a bit so we packed up and continued up and over the small pass in reasonable weather before a very wet descent to Puerto Yunguay. There are only a few houses at Puerto Yunguay, but it is also the site of a free government-run ferry that takes you across the fjord to continue the Carretera Austral southwards to Villa O’Higgins. It runs 3 times a day most days of the week. We were well within time for the 6pm ferry and had time join the motorcyclists and other drivers drying off and warming up in the tiny kiosk that serves hot coffee, cakes and fritas and usually empanadas. Gareth manged to sort some repairs to our tent poles whilst in the dry, hopefully they’ll withstand use tonight.

The ferry ride took about 45mins and was uneventful, but  it was nice to continue sitting in the warm. Once across the fjord we continued on the bikes for about another hour before finding a suitable camp pitch by a small river. Again we got the tent up just before the rain restarted in force again.
