The Leaving Party

The Leaving Party

Party and the off

We're off again on our travels!!!
After months of thinking about it, formulating the plan, booking our flights and last minute packing we were in need of a farewell party with a fine mix of Tod harriers, Calderdale tri club members and West Mount Vets staff. The theme was Heros and Villains, creating a good opportunity to get the fancy dress box out. Mr and Mrs Incredible hosted the party with fine attendences from Dangermouse, Trinity, Bonnie and Clyde, Calamity Jane and Wyatt Earp (or was it Woody from Toy Story), Number 1, Santa, The one and only miniture hero and may more.
Two weeks since the party now and our Bikes and bags are packed. A marathon has been run and we are ready to go......

Free Refugio

30th Jan, Wild camp small river to Free Refugio (20M)

No floods this morning
Not a good nights sleep for either of us, we were both concerned that the small river we’d pitched near would rise with the ongoing rain and we’d wake this morning washed away. Actually despite the rain all night, the river level actually dropped near our tent, so all that loss of sleep for nothing.
Again we actually managed a relatively dry day of cycling and benefited from the recent rain with a beautiful display of numerous waterfalls. We also benefited from a good tail wind, but again we stopped for the day earlier than planned as the weather closed in on us again, thankfully about the time we spotted a free Refugio hut. It’s location was described to us by a really helpful campsite owner from Villa O’Higgins. There are a couple of them, newly installed along the road to provide cyclists, hitchers and other tourists with a refuge if needed. Ours was needed tonight. The rain resumed, the wind picked up and a shelter with a fireplace and accessible firewood was perfect. We hung up our damp kit and spent the evening huddled round the fire before bundling into our sleeping bags listening to the wind and rain on the tin roof, very thankful for this refuge.
